Job Title:  Assistant Principal (Middle School)

 

Reports To:  Building Principal

 

General Job Description: This position functions to provide assistance to the principal with all school activities, assigned responsibilities and to assume complete charge in the absence of the principal. Under the supervision of the principal, this position supervises instruction and itinerant personnel, supervises staff and student activities, is responsible for facility and serves in a leadership role in parent and community affairs.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the Principal in providing leadership, supervision, and evaluation of the instructional programs and
    expectations for the school, including the application of the following competencies: Ethical Leadership, Visionary Leadership, Instructional Leadership, Personal and Professional Leadership, Multicultural Leadership, Ethical Leadership, Community Relations Leadership, Political Leadership, and Legal and Fiscal Leadership.
  2. Assist the Principal in providing and/or facilitate training of staff with regard to the most effective practices which lead to higher student achievement regardless of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or prior academic achievement.
  3. Analyze and interpret school-level data; work with staff to develop School Improvement Plans that contain strategies to improve student learning.
  4. Interpret and implement Board policies and administrative regulations.
  5. Lead diverse staff, student body, and the community in development and implementation of building-level goals focused on the improvement of student learning.
  6. Lead staff in development and implementation of District and building-level goals relating to cultural competency and student learning.
  7. Assist the Principal in setting building-level priorities in the context of community and District priorities and student/staff needs.
  8. Assist the Principal in establishing a school climate which promotes equal opportunities for all students, good conduct, and positive attitudes and values, and accept responsibility for the attendance, conduct, health, and safety of students.
  9. Assist the Principal in the screening, selection, orientation, training, assignment, and reassignment of culturally competent and diverse school staff.
  10. Supervise and evaluate the performance of all assigned personnel and engage staff in the development of professional growth activities designed to support individual school/District goals and programs in order to improve student learning.
  11. Assist the Principal in the development, ongoing improvement, and implementation of the District and school curricular program.
  12. Assist the Principal in establishing a set of culturally responsive standard operating procedures, practices, and routines.
  13. Assist in overseeing the school's extracurricular program.
  14. Supervise the maintenance and operation of the building, grounds, and property assigned to the building.
  15. Assist the Principal in planning and developing the school's budget with input from staff, allocate and adjust fiscal and material resources, assure timely completion of reports, and record maintenance for all school programs.
  16. Provide for effective staff communication; collaborate and resolve conflicts with others.
  17. Work cooperatively with other administrators; advise academic managers and other appropriate District administrators of progress, problems, and other information regarding the school's program.
  18. Demonstrate success in philosophy, curriculum, and instruction at the position’s grade level, including an understanding of a culturally responsive instructional process and a variety of instructional techniques, as well as a commitment to the improvement of instructional programs.
  19. Demonstrate success in leading the improvement of student learning, as evidenced by the improvement of school-based and/or District-based data points.
  20. Demonstrate successful and culturally responsive leadership experiences in staff leadership, supervision, and evaluation, and demonstrated ability to work effectively with teachers to improve instruction.
  21. Demonstrate ability and desire to establish positive relationships with persons regardless of race, gender, physical limitation, sexual orientation, or religious belief, with an active commitment to equal opportunity for all students and staff.
  22. Demonstrate ability to foster an environment that focuses on quality results while motivating, developing, and supporting a diverse staff, encouraging continuous improvement, and working effectively as a member of a diverse team.

  26. Demonstrate effectiveness in using computer technologies to enhance instruction and to manage building functions.
  27. Demonstrate success in exercising good judgment, insight, self-awareness, integrity, and cultural responsiveness .
  28. Perform all other related duties/functions as assigned by Building Principal and/or Superintendent.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Any and all building staff as directed by Principal and/or Superintendent.

 

Qualifications:

  1. Must possess or be able to acquire a New Mexico PED school administrative license.
  2. Have previously demonstrated at least five (5) years of successful licensed teaching experience.
  3. Must be able to pass employment verification and background check

 

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 50 pounds), climbing stairs, reaching, squatting, kneeling, having full mobility of fingers/hands, and moving light furniture may be required, unless ADA accommodations have been mutually agreed on and does not create an undue hardship upon the district.

 

Safety and Health:

Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions (blood borne pathogens, body fluids, etc.)

 

Equipment/Material Handled:

Must know how to properly operate, or be willing to learn to operate, multi-media equipment including current technology as needed.

 

Work Environment:

Must be able to work within various degrees of noise and temperature.  Interruptions of work are routine.  Flexibility and patience are required.  Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision.  After hours work may be required.  May work under stressful conditions on occasion.

 

Terms of Employment:

Salary and work year to be established by the Board.
