Description

Job Title:  SUBSTITUTE SCHOOL BUS DRIVER 
 
Reports To:  TRANSPORTATION SUPERVISOR/DIRECTOR
 
General Job Description:
Drives bus to transport students over specified routes according to time schedule. Complies with traffic regulations.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Drives a school us safely and professionally on a regular schedule arranged and posted in the school bus.
  • Performs and properly completes daily pre-trip inspections (safety and cleanliness).
  • Ensures emergency and safety equipment is present on the bus at all times.
  • Complies with the district's school bus operating guidelines.
  • Observes and follow all regulations of the State Board of Education and its policies, rules and regulations.
  • Complies with all traffic ordinances.
  • Considers and adjusts bus operation to in relation to road and traffic conditions. Complies with the district's policies concerning passenger eligibility to ride the bus.
  • Enforces district policy restricting food, drink or unsafe objects on the bus.
  • Complies with discipline polices set forth in the School Code of Conduct for Transportation.
  • Maintains scheduled stops as per time schedule.
  • Reports any accidents promptly.
  • Ensures passenger safety at all times.    
  • Notifies building principal immediately of any traffic signal malfunction at his/her school.
  • Participates in on-site training.
  • Shows proficiency in handling and maneuvering school bus.
  • Complete other tasks as deemed appropriate by the immediate supervisor and/or the superintendent.

 
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage time appropriately.
  • Cooperate with administration, parents, and co-workers.
  • Take precautions to protect equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Use and apply appropriate conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrate public relations skills.
  • Use appropriate techniques, strategies, and materials to achieve the desired instructional goal.
  • Report suspected child abuse and neglect.
  • Be responsible for students on trips.
  • Act as a good role model within the context of school transportation.

 
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervises students who access transportation services.
 
Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma.
  2. Must pass physical including drug test.
  3. Ability to work in a friendly manner with supervisor, co-workers and students.
  4. Ability to read and understand maps.
  5. Ability to pass State Skill Test, State Written Test, Department Transportation physical and SDE Basic Training Program.
  6. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form.
  7. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

 
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and occasionally required to walk or stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and turn while performing the duties of this job. The employee frequently will reach above the head and forward. The employee frequently uses hand strength to grasp equipment or students. Occasionally but essentially the employee must be able to drive. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and push or pull up to 90 pounds such as students or students in wheel chairs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and depth perception and peripheral vision.

Equipment/Material Handled:
Must know how to properly operate, or be willing to learn to operate, multi-media equipment including current technology as needed.
 
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 and below 32 and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with public and other workers. The employee has direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of others.
